Overview

Stenberg Capital's previous annual report was assembled the way most are: financial tables from one department, narrative copy from another, and a design firm asked to make it 'feel premium' after the fact. GRAY was engaged a full quarter before publication with a different mandate — build the grid first, and let every subsequent contributor write into it.

The report runs on a twelve-column baseline grid held constant across all 160 pages, with a strict four-weight type scale governing every heading level from section divider down to footnote. Nothing on the page is sized by feel; every proportion traces back to the same underlying module, the same discipline GRAY applies to interactive systems, applied here to ink and paper.

The bespoke data visualisations — fund performance, sector allocation, five-year comparatives — were drawn as a coherent chart family rather than commissioned individually: one line weight, one dot size, one colour logic for positive and negative movement, so a reader can parse page 40 with the pattern they learned on page 12.

Print production followed the same precision as the layout: a controlled four-colour press run, an uncoated stock chosen specifically so the data visualisations would not glare under the fund's typical boardroom lighting, and a binding tolerance tight enough that the grid registers identically whether the reader opens to page 8 or page 152.

The finished volume reads less like a compliance document and more like a specimen of the studio's own design system — proof, delivered to shareholders, that the same rigour Stenberg Capital expects from its portfolio construction is visible in how the firm explains itself on paper.
