Overview

Since 2001, GRAY has created a new golf umbrella design each year for CONNECT-ive Solutions, produced for the company's regular customers and business partners. The project began with a familiar piece of corporate merchandise. Rather than treating it as a standard promotional item carrying a company logo, the decision was made to create a different design every year — and to keep making one, year after year.

The format stays essentially unchanged: the same recognisable object, the same practical purpose, the same relationship between company and recipient. Within that fixed shape, each year provides one opportunity for a new visual response. The design challenge is deliberately narrow — what can change when the object itself does not?

Over time, repetition has transformed the object. A single umbrella is merchandise. A new umbrella every year becomes a series — one that recipients now notice, compare, and quietly collect. Year, design, gift, use, next year: the individual object is temporary, but the tradition is continuous.

The umbrellas are given to regular customers and partners rather than distributed to an anonymous promotional audience, which changes their function. They are not simply advertising objects — they are a recurring acknowledgement of an existing relationship. As recipients encounter another edition, the previous umbrellas become part of the context for the new one, and what began as a promotional object has acquired memory.

GRAY develops the annual visual concept and umbrella design while working within the series' established format. The creative opportunity comes from variation within a constraint rather than continual reinvention of the object itself — one client, one object, one new design, every year since 2001.

This case study is a deliberate change of pace from GRAY's larger technical and systems projects. It demonstrates that a long-running design relationship can be expressed through something remarkably simple: a useful object, reconsidered once a year, with the accumulated archive itself standing as the evidence.
